Sweden to host conference on humanitarian situation in Palestine
Palestine-Israel-Sweden, Politics, 8/16/2006

Sweden, Spain and Norway will jointly host a conference in Stockholm on September 1 on the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, focusing especially on Gaza.

"At the same time as the eyes of the world are rightly directed towards the ongoing crisis in Lebanon, we must not forget the situation in the West Bank and Gaza," Minister for International Development Cooperation Carin Jamtin said.

The conference is being held in consultation with the United Nations and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Swedish government said it has invited a large number of countries and international organizations to participate in the conference.

"The humanitarian situation in occupied Palestinian territories is deteriorating all the time.

The human suffering in Gaza especially is getting worse by the day," Jamtin added.

The conference which will primarily focus on humanitarian relief, humanitarian access and early recovery is a follow-up to a meeting with the same focus held in Geneva on July 14, 2006.

It will be held a day after the international donor conference on Lebanon to facilitate the participation of countries and organizations proposing to attend both conferences, an official press release said.

The August 31 conference in Stockholm will focus on humanitarian needs and early reconstruction and is being arranged in cooperation with the Government of Lebanon and the United Nations.

"The international community must now support Lebanon's recovery and help the afflicted people of Lebanon," said Minister for Foreign Affairs Jan Eliasson.

"Ultimately, this conference is about solidarity with the people of Lebanon and about asserting the sovereignty of Lebanon," he said.
