Calls for trying Israeli officials for war crimes in Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 8/16/2006
Some 243 Member of Parliament (MPs) in an open letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today called for bringing to justice Israeli leaders for the war crimes they perpetrated against Lebanese civilians and oblige the occupying regime of Israel to pay reparations for the extensive damages it inflicted on Lebanese infrastructure.
Member of Majlis presiding board Hossein Nejabat read out the letter in formal session of Majlis today.
"You are expected to fulfill your responsibility for establishment of international peace and security and defending the rights of nations who have been exposed to aggression," part of the letter said.
"Unfortunately, certain articles of the Security Council Resolution 1701 have been composed in a bias way in favor of the aggressor." The MPs added in their letter that, the Occupying Regime of Qods imposed in an unequal war on Lebanon in contradiction with the international law and regulations with bombing Lebanon's civilian targets.
"The occupying regime and its supporters that unleashed the full-scale war on Lebanon aiming to establish a new Middle East, they could not achieve their military goal thanks to Lebanese fierce resistance, so they attempted to score political victory by passing a resolution in favor of the aggressor," the MPs said in the letter to Annan.
Worth noting that a UN committee already has agreed to investigate Israel following its bombing of Palestinian civilian property. This coincided with Switzerland declaring that Israel has violated the laws of war. It is not clear what the results of the UN investigation will be in terms of bringing Israeli officials to account of these stated violations, and war crimes. The Red Cross, Amnesty International among others had previously said that Israel had violated the Geneva Convention.
