Algerian PM underlines Iran's role in promotion of regional security
Algeria-Iran, Politics, 8/14/2006

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem in a meeting with the visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki today underlined Iran's crucial role in promotion of regional security.

Belkhadem said that foreign enemies have drawn up new plots to stir up agitation and clashes among regional states within the framework of the new Middle East plan, adding that Iran's role in preventing such moves is quite decisive and important.

He underlined Iran's right to access nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, as well as that of other countries and the region, and said that Algeria's approach to the issue is quite clear.

"We believe that a selective approach to the issue is unacceptable and international agreements on nuclear disarmament should also be applicable to the countries currently possessing such weapons.

"Besides, the NPT member states should be entitled to peaceful use of nuclear energy," he added.

Condemning the brutal aggressions of the Zionist regime on Lebanon, the Algerian prime minister said that Israel's moves take place according to a preplanned program and that they have never been seeking peace and tranquility in the region.

"The enemies intended to create chaos in the region, but did not succeed. They should not be allowed to pursue their aggressive goals under the cover of the United Nations Security Council resolution," Belkhadem added.

For his part, Mottaki underlined Iran's interest in expansion of relations with the brotherly country of Algeria and briefed the Algerian prime minister on Iran's principled approach to regional and global issues.
