Lebanon- Israel ceasefire violated by Israel
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 8/14/2006
Israeli forces killed a combatant of Islamic Resistance, military wing of Hizbullah, in southern Lebanon today, violating the first clause of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 which calls for stopping war and hostile actions.
Based on the Resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council, a truce would be enforced between Israel and Lebanon as of 05:00 hours GMT on Monday as the UN is preparing to deploy up to 15,000 troops to help enforce the ceasefire.
Israeli soldiers by shooting at Hizbullah forces stationed at a place close to Litany River in southern Lebanon killed a Hizbullah combatant.
Qods occupying regime's media quoting the regime's military sources claimed that Hizbullah forces started the shooting.
The sources added Israel has imposed curfew on southern bank of Litany River.
According to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which was adopted by consensus, a ceasefire has come into force since Monday morning in the southern Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora had said on Saturday that his cabinet would back the resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council yesterday. He told reporters that the resolution is in the interest of Lebanon. "This resolution shows that the whole world stood by Lebanon," Siniora said.
Israel's Prie Minister said yesterday that "UN Security Council resolution 1701 is a good resolution that creates true conditions to implement UNSCR 1559 and prevent a return to the status quo."
As of 8:00 am this morning, Israel said that it forces have "stopped its offensive operations in Lebanon. This is in accordance with the decision of the Israeli government, which is based on UN resolution 1701. The IDF will respect the ceasefire, but will continue to defend its forces and the citizens of Israel." Israel acknowledged that nine of its soldiers were killed and 25 were injured in different incidents Sunday night, before the ceasefire.
CNN reported that the ceasefire adopted by Lebanon and Israel's governments, and that Hizbullah would observe it, but will fight as long as there are Israeli soldiers on Lebanese soil. Of the Israeli shooting, CNN reported that Israelis gave the excuse for the incident that fresh from fighting it was hard for some soldiers to stop.
Israel, which started its major aggression that was widely condemned for its brutality, had failed to achieve its two stated goals of freeing of two kidnapped Israeli soldiers, and disarming Hizbullah. Israel, which has repeatedly violated Lebanon's sovereignty, said the Israeli soldiers kidnapping was a provocation for the aggression on Lebanon.
In exclusive statements to Al-Messa Editor-in-Chief, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said in spite of the amendments introduced by the Arab delegation to the draft resolution at the last hours, yet the resolution is unbalanced in many aspects.
Mubarak criticized the resolution for failing to clearly answer his repeated demands since the very beginning of the crisis mainly to call for 'an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. It disregarded parts of the seven-item draft plan floated by Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora at Rome conference, he said. And it also overlooked all of the amendments what the Lebanese government had asked the UNSC to endorse, he added.
Mubarak slammed the UNSC for its slowness' in moving to contain the crisis and end the Israeli aggression on Lebanon. Any way "We welcome the international resolution for being the first step in the right direction. And, to put it simply, we just accept that the Lebanese government accepts."
US Secretary General Kofi Annan had expressed great regret that there was such a long wait for this resolution to be issued. Today Annan said "Expressing relief that the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and northern Israel “appears to be generally holding” since it began earlier today, Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on all sides in the recent conflict in the region to act quickly to consolidate progress and then convert it into a durable ceasefire."
