US policy going down Israel's failed trails
Lebanon-Israel-USA, Analysis, 8/1/2006
The Israeli intentional intense harm to Lebanese civilians, with Israel now hoping to evict Lebanese citizens from southern villages by bombs and fear seems to follow a long history. But, there is something disturbing about the lack of opposition by the US to the killings and destruction of civilian lives for Israeli military objectives.
The US, one would think, would be adamantly opposed to any such acts of acts against civilians under any circumstance, let alone being it a war crime issue. How did the US get dragged into such a position is an interesting question.
Terrorism is being defined as taking the lives of civilians and destroying their property. By the US justifying these acts, the US has placed itself on the wrong side and consequences can be considerable. Public opinion worldwide does not seem supportive of the US political stances, and in the Arab world, the US position is loosing place at a dramatically accelerated rate, according to reports. Who is the US paying such price for? Itself or Israel?
These US positions have ramifications on countries such as Iraq and others. High level US officials have indicated clearly that Israel's action is effecting US policy and its political position in the region, sending signal to Israel that its action is costing the US considerably.
Other US officials are so conditioned to being unable to declare a clear opposition statement to Israel's policy that it begs the question of how much fear such officials must have to be unable to make statements that are for protecting US own interest when US policy comes in conflict with Israeli goals and acts.
Israel overreacts trying to be the tough guy on the block, and the US officials have to clean up for them and after them.
Israel, in effect a client country of the US, where US aid and military and economy has subsidized Israel's development and existence, seems to have skewed US policy to the point of major damage. Israeli officials and their supports like to project themselves as a "state," conveying the feeling of a US state, such as "the state of California" or "the state of Nebraska". But clearly, the Israeli public seems to bear little to no resemblance to the US public. The aggressiveness of the Israelis in their support of their government, and their accepting and being such brutal occupier of people and their disregard for international and humanitarian law leaves the Israelis and their supporters a vague idea of the "Israelis are like us".
Israel campaigned very strongly for the US to attack Iraq. The US has been forced to do Israel's bidding for far too long on many issues.
David Gergen observed today on Fox news that Israel has gotten itself into a bind, saying the current situation is a political disaster for Israel, and as a result for the US as well. Journalist Bob Novak observed long ago that Israel is the dog tail that wags the US policy. Chris Mathew of Hardball show asked many months ago while intervening a Rolling Stone reporter, paraphrasing, about how the US got into Iraq saying "who was crying for this war? Krauthammer, Kristol and Safire?" These are self-declared "supporters" of Israel, and there is nothing wrong with such a declaration. It would be interesting to see on TV and media a respectable fraction who are already a self-declared "opponents" of Israel given such prominence. What would be wrong with that? The public clearly can only benefit from such diversity of views. But, in light of such current public forums, it is possible to say that the US public interest is not being served by such uniformity and possible fear undercurrent that chills a forthright debate on this issue. In this case, for the sake of amusing ourselves, let us call this issue a "sensitive issue."
It is sensitive because Israel's seems to have a great interest in keeping the US public misinformed by skewing how the US public views and interprets certain facts. For that, Israel is not to blame; they are simply doing what is in their best interest.
Whether in Iraq where more than 2000 US soldiers have been killed so far, and billions of American money spent, and much influence lost around the region and the world. US policy is being trapped once again by Israel's aggression. And, there is temptation by US officials to try to accept such reality as a defacto situation and try to justify to themselves under some wide strategic objective. The US seems to be always trying to work around Israel's interest and mistakes, and the implications can be far reaching for US presence and influence in the region. US defense of Israel's actions has reached a point, and some US officials clearly are not saying out loud, but can be interpreted to be indicating that Israel may be abusing the privilege. That seems like an extremely polite way to say something, considering current realities.
