Failure to call for Lebanon ceasefire illogical: Irish FM
Lebanon-Israel-Ireland, Politics, 7/29/2006
Ireland's Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern yesterday expressed his disappointment at the lack of an international call for an immediate ceasefire in Israel's continuing attacks on Lebanon.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Ahern said the failure to call for a ceasefire "defied logic," according to Ireland's Breaking News Service.
Foreign ministers, led by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rica, held a conference in Rome earlier this week to discuss how to secure a ceasefire and end the ongoing Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, but failed to reach agreement.
Following reports that a Scottish airport was being used as a conduit by the US to send 'bunker-busting' bombs to Israel, Ahern rejected suggestions that Shannon airport on the west coast of Ireland may also have been used for American shipments.
Shannon airport has regularly been used by the US as a transit to ferry troops and military equipment to Iraq but has caused wide-scale anti-war protests.
The Irish Foreign Minister said that he had trusted assurances from the US that there was no such transport of arms for Israel going through the west coast airport.
On Wednesday, Ahern summoned the Israeli Ambassador to Dublin Daniel Megiddo to protest against Israel's killing of four unarmed UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
He told the envoy that the attacks were either "reckless" or "targeted" and that his excuse for the killings was neither acceptable nor credible.
