Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 7/15/2006
Secretary General of Lebanese Hezbollah Party Hassan Nasrallah, in a message broadcast on local radio and television last night, declared the "extensive war" of Hizbullah against the aggression of the Israeli regime.
Nasrallah threatened, in his message, that Hizbullah will target the center of the occupied lands, including the strategic port city of Haifa.
The Los Angeles Times meantime reported that "The escalation began at sunset Friday as Israel staged a massive airstrike on the one-story building that housed the living quarters and offices of Nasrallah."
The Los Angeles Times report added "In the crowded, predominantly Shiite Muslim neighborhoods that are Hizbullah's nerve center, intersections, highway overpasses and bridges were blown to pieces Friday. Vast fans of black smoke climbed high into the sky from the Beirut airport, which was bombed for the second day in a row. The country was under virtual siege, its ports blockaded, its airport crippled and roads and bridges to the borders shattered."
Israel acknowledged that Hizbullah hit an Israeli military the body of one of the four Israeli sailors reported missing after a naval vessel was hit by Hizbullah fire off the coast of Lebanon on Friday night has been recovered. Israel said "The army is investigating how the vessel, which is meant to be protected from missile attacks, was hit."
The New York Times reported that "More than 100 rockets rained down on northern Israel on Friday in a third straight day of attacks, killing a woman and her 5-year-old grandson, while thousands of residents around here packed their cars, boarded buses and hitched rides out of a region that normally enjoys a large influx of tourists on summer weekends."
Israel said today that Three Katyusha missiles landed in the city of Tiberius after Hizbullah launched a barrage of Katyusha rockets at Israel.
Following the detention of a few Israeli soldiers by Hizbullah, the Israeli army launched extensive attacks on Lebanese civilian targets, particularly its southern and eastern areas, for three consecutive days.
Israel has launched a full-scale attack by air, sea and land on Lebanon. Beirut airport has been bombed, ports have been subjected to naval bombardment and residential areas attacked, as well as a main road in that connects to Syria. The attacks were against a routes and bridges in area of the Bekaa area.
Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel would stop its attacks if the captured two Israeli soldiers are released, and the firing of missiles on Israeli towns should be stopped. Olmert added also that UN resolution 1559 that calls for disarming Hizbullah should be implemented. It is not clear why Israel is now calling for honoring UN resolutions, when Israel has been as an occupier formally in violation of UN resolutions, and as recently as days ago, declared by Switzerland to be in violation of International Humanitarian Law, The Geneva Convention, as was stated also by other organizations such as the Red Cross and many others of the Israeli violation of the Geneva Convention.
During the attacks, which still continue, the civilian death toll is said to be near 60, and many injured and great material loss was inflicted on the country's infrastructure installations.
Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Seniora said "Seniora said that Israel was deliberately cutting Lebanon's arteries, destroying its infrastructure and killing innocent civilians."
Switzerland as recently as days ago said Israel's attacks on civilians are a violation of international humanitarian law, which means a violation of the Geneva Convention. The UN civil rights committee has voted to start an investigation into Israel's actions.
