Algeria, Iran discuss women sports affairs
Algeria-Iran, Culture, 7/15/2006
The visiting head of the Iranian Women Sports Federation, Faezeh Hashemi, met Algerian Culture Minister Khalida Toumi in Algeria yesterday.
The two sides discussed mutual cooperation in women sports affairs taking into account the common cultural bonds enjoyed by the two Muslim nations.
"Islam has established a desirable and appropriate status for women just as it rejects biased confrontation between men and women in society," Hashemi said.
Elaborating on the activities of her federation in Islamic countries and non-Muslim nations sports activities, she said Muslim women should try their best to achieve a place in the international cultural and sports arenas.
She cited women's assiduousness and knowledge as two good reasons for promoting their social status and for reenforcing their rights.
Toumi, for her part, referred to the role women have played in revolutions, citing Algerian women as examples of women who have always upheld their Islamic culture and national traditions in social and scientific arenas.
Toumi also discussed ways of promoting cooperation among countries in women sporting events. Faezeh Hashemi is currently on a four-day visit to Algeria upon the invitation of the Algerian Sports and Youth Ministry.
