Ahmadi-Nejad: Iran would quit Nuclear Treaty if rights not protected
Iran-UN, Politics, 7/15/2006
Iran warned that it would leave the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty if the treaty is abused by the enemies of Iran who would try to take Iran's rights under the treaty.
This comes following the decision promoted by the US and EU for the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany to move the Iran nuclear issue back once again to the UN Security Council.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said about the decision that the Iranians have given no indication at all that they are ready to engage seriously on the substance of our proposals, in a statement agreed with his colleagues from the United States, Britain, Germany, Russia and China.
Iran had been offered trade, diplomatic and technology incentives as well as multilateral talks involving the US if it agreed to a suspension.
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said "It has to be understood that any tough action will be to the detriment of all parties.. Iran wants to keep the calm, and we advise (the major powers) to stay calm and avoid taking any action that increases pessimism."
Mottaki in a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis yesterday said using peaceful technology is an indisputable right of all countries.
Concerning Iran's nuclear program the Greek prime minister expressed hope that Iran would respond to the EU proposal package by mid-August, adding Greece wants a solution for Iran's nuclear issue through dialogue and diplomacy.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad warned Thursday that Tehran could halt UN inspections and quit the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if subjected to increased pressure over its peaceful nuclear program.
According to the Daily Times, the threat came just hours after world powers referred the crisis back to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions over a failure by Iran to respond to demands that it suspend uranium enrichment and other related activities.
Up to now the Iranian people have acted within the framework of the NPT and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), the president said. But if they reach the conclusion that Western countries do not have goodwill and sincerity the Iranian people will revise their policy, Ahmadinejad said.
"If some are after creating problems, they should know that any problem created for Iran in the region will harm the interests of everyone," he said.
He added that the Americans want to create disputes, while everyone is trying to keep the atmosphere calm, to continue the constructive, fair and legal talks to resolve the (nuclear) issue, telling the United States not to interfere in the dispute, saying it could be resolved in talks with the European Union.
Iran says it wants to enrich uranium only to make reactor fuel, and rejects accusations that it wants to acquire the capacity to make nuclear weapons.
The US had previously declared that it will not allow Iran nuclear rights, but later when its policy failed to bring any results, the US changed its position and offered Iran incentives and talks.
It is seen by some that the US and EU offering the incentives package as very likely to be a ploy by not having intention for real talks, since they set preconditions for entering into the talks.
Iran's president had said that nuclear energy is more valuable than oil, and Mexican officials have noted that the US acted in the past to monopolize these energy sources saying the US acted in early in the century against Mexico the same way by claiming Mexico was unable to handle the oil technology itself. The US is seen trying to offer some countries incentives to corner the nuclear energy fuel and technology market away from other world countries, in return for support against Iran.
Iran has said it will not compromise on the right to make its own nuclear fuel and be able exploit this energy source and technology for its civil development.
