Israel devising long-term attacks: Syrian observer
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 7/15/2006
A Syrian political analyst has said Israel is apparently devising a long-term offensive against Lebanon.
Shaaban Abud said yesterday that the Israeli attacks aim to remove the Hizbullah from the border areas of occupied Palestine and prevent attacks on Israeli-occupied areas north of Palestine.
He moreover said that the Israeli occupiers were seeking to plant the seed of discord among the Hizbullah and Lebanese people, who have extended all-out support to the development of Hizbullah.
Abud noted that the Israelis were preparing the ground for the ouster of the Hizbullah and resistance movement by bombing Lebanese infrastructure and causing great economic loss to the country.
"Israel is trying to cover its weaknesses in the Middle East by pretending it can wage wars on several fronts simultaneously," he said.
He said that Syria, Lebanon and the resistance forces of Palestine believed the operations of the Hizbullah will reduce Israeli pressure on Hamas.
Hizbullah has threatened to extend its operations against the Israeli army and target Israeli-occupied towns with its 12,000 missiles, he added.
Abud further expressed regret that some Lebanese political activists have shunned responsibility for supporting Hizbullah under these crucial circumstances.
The Syrian political observer concluded that despite the rise in political differences among the Lebanese, they have no other alternative but to maintain unity against the Israeli aggression.
