Putin warns against stepping up pressure on Iran over nuclear program

Russia's President Vladimir Putin warned against attempts to exert too much pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, saying it could lead to a political "impasse."

"We are of the opinion that one should not aggravate the situation which could lead to an impasse," Putin said in an interview with Germany's ZDF public television network late Thursday evening.

"We think that we have worked out a good common mechanism for such sensitive questions of the international situation which includes also the Iranian nuclear program," the Russian leader added.

Putin pointed to past "negative examples" in the Mideast region where efforts for a swift solution of a political problem have led to a quagmire like in the case of Iraq.

"We have the same objectives which is to ensure permanent security throughout the world. Perhaps we have differences over solution methods for certain problems. However you can normally achieve excellent results in an open and partnership dialogue. I hope that this will also be the case with Iran this time," Putin said.

Tehran has repeatedly said it is reviewing the latest 5 plus 1 offer as it contained a series of ambiguities and questions.
Iran plans to respond to the 5 plus 1 proposal sometime after mid-August.
