Nuclear energy looks critical for the future
Regional-Iran, Analysis, 7/13/2006

The Europeans have tried to force action against Iran at the UN Security council, and repeatedly failed, settling along with the US for a diplomatic course by offering Iran incentives in the hope of forcing Iran to suspend making nuclear fuel.

Their actions indicate that they were not aiming to resolve their concerns, but that they merely aim to strip Iran from its rights under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The US, which makes unsubstantiated allegations against Iran on the nuclear issue, has repeated efforts fail to bring a UN Security Council resolution against Iran.

With the expected G-8 meeting this Friday, being held in Russia, the US can be seen as trying to buy off Russian support by dangling carrots of cooperation with it on entering the WTO and in the nuclear civil technology area, in return for sanctions against Iran.

Clearly, the merit of WTO and nuclear cooperation should be based on their merit, and as such, the US can benefit from more availability of nuclear energy development for the future which would lessen demand on the international oil market, benefiting the US, and other countries as well. The US may have to recognize this reality.

It is positive that Egypt and the Arab states are now advocating the right to exploit nuclear fuel making and nuclear technology for all countries, including themselves.

Iran making its own nuclear fuel is positive as it will lessen need for oil demand, where reports speak of oil supply constraint in the future. If we hope for strong and extended economic growth in China, India, and the rest of the world, and what this would entail of large energy needs, then the world will need much nuclear energy.

Jamil Kazoun
