Syria and Iran share views on Iraq, region
Syria-Iran, Politics, 7/10/2006

Iran's Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in a meeting with visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muaallem yesterday said that Iran's efforts to reduce ethnic and religious discord in Iraq have been very effective in promoting regional security and called for cooperation between the two states in this respect.

At the meeting, Rafsanjani deplored the criminals acts of terrorist who attacked pilgrims in the holy city of Kufa as well as Sunni and Shia mosques.

He underlined that establishment of favorable condition in the region, in particular Iraq and Palestine, required further cooperation among Islamic states.

"The sensitive situation in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq calls for proper grounds for further collaboration between Iran and Syria to solve the problems in these countries.

"Both the common allies and adversaries of Iran and Syria as well as their goals account for the great impact of their mutual ties on the region and the world of Islam," he added.

Rafsanjani referred to the recent crimes and aggression on the Palestinians by the Zionist regime in Gaza Strip as deplorable and said that close cooperation between Islamic states and resistance of Palestinian people can help change the situation to their own interests.

For his part, Muaallem pointed to the pressures exerted on Iran and Syria by some countries as a significant factor contributing to the solidarity between the the two states.

Terming the strengthening of Iran-Syria ties as a great impediment to the illegal goals of foreign troops in Iraq and Palestine, he said, "Israel's recent actions have led to a favorable unity among Muslims.

Such a atmosphere should be used properly to condemn the Zionist regime." The minister pointed to the cooperation among Iraq's neighboring states as effective and said that Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq are among the countries where the Islamic states should get united to take measures against foreign troops and build unity among Muslims.
