Amr Moussa, Rafsanjani exchange views on Palestinian, Iraqi crises
Regional-Iran, Politics, 7/10/2006

Iran's Chairman of Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjaniyesterday said that Iran views cooperation and consultation with Islamic and Arab nations as essential in the interest of the region and has given preference to this in its foreign policy.

In a meeting with Secretary General of Arab League Amr Moussa, Rafsanjani said that Islamic nations and international fora are expected to actively deal with the tragedies the Muslim people have been subject to in Palestine and Iraq.

"The basic solution for the human catastrophes from which the Muslim people of Palestine and Iraq are suffering lies in the solidarity of the World Muslims and Islamic and Arab organizations should work for Muslim solidarity," Rafsanjani said.

He said that security crisis in the Middle East is interdependent on continued occupation and greed of the "world arrogance "and, given what they are doing in Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq, the prospects for security in near future is gloomy.

Rafsanjani criticized adventurizm by certain states about Iranian nuclear program and said that their propaganda campaign against Iranian nuclear program for civilian purpose will escalate tension in the region.

For his part, Moussa said that a balance should be enforced in international community. It is not acceptable to put pressure on Iran for its civilian nuclear program whereas, Israel possesses nuclear arms, he said.

The Arab League chief described the situation in Iraq as worrying and hoped national reconstruction drive ushered in by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki would serve to bring about tranquility in Iraq in near future.

He condemned Israel's "state terrorism" and said that Islamic nations are expected to take a common stance to force Israel to respect rights of Palestinian people living in their homeland and stop systematic killing of Palestinian women, children and men.

Moussa dismissed as double standard the UN Security Council decision to exert pressure on Iran and Syria whereas, Israel does not heed resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
