Iraq-Iran, Politics, 7/6/2006
Some 13 people were killed and 36 others wounded in a car bomb explosion in the Iraqi holy city of Kufa, according to initial reports.
A car bomb exploded at 7:15 (local time) today morning near a Shiite mosque in Kufa, 160km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The bomb exploded in a car stationed between two buses carrying Iranian pilgrims.
According to security and hospital sources and eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred as the Iranian pilgrims were preparing to board a bus at the site.
The number of casualties could still go up, sources said. The killed and injured in the blast have been brought to various hospitals in the holy city of Najaf for treatment.
Iran has condemned the car bomb explosion which occurred earlier Thursday in the Iraqi holy city of Kufa in which a number of Iranian pilgrims were martyred or wounded.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi called on the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibility of safeguarding Iranian pilgrims in the country, and to bring to justice those responsible, describing the terrorist act as "brutal" and a betrayal of the Iraqi nation and national unity and an act of service to the enemies of Iraq."
