Iranian official condemns terrorist acts in Iraq
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 7/5/2006

Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi today condemned terrorist "acts and crimes committed by occupation forces in Iraq."

Ayatollah Shahroudi made the remark in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani on the third day of the latter's official visit to Iran.

Shahroudi stressed the need to reinforce unity among all Iraqi people.

"Enemies inside Iraq seeks an atmosphere of turmoil and foreign enemies try to make the country insecure," he said.

He said remnants of the Baath regime of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein are currently present at security and military bodies of the country, adding, "Enemies of the Iraqi nation and government intend to sow discord among Muslims and followers of other religions.

He called on Iraqi statesmen to adopt serious measures to neutralize conspiracies of domestic and foreign enemies.

He stated that formation of the Iraqi government and parliament and official institutions would improve situation in the country, stressing, "Other bodies should be set up in Iraq at the earliest.

Such measures will expedite the pull-out of foreign forces from Iraq." Shahroudi urged the Iraqi parliament to set a timetable for the foreign forces' withdrawal from the country and prepare the ground and necessary atmosphere to materialize the issue.

He called for establishment of joint councils between Shi'ite and Sunni ulema, saying it would promote religious commonalties.

"The Muslim people of Iraq should preserve their independence and identity based on religious commonalties and Islamic tenets." Pointing to efforts underway to sow discord among Shi'ite and Sunnis in the name of Islam, the judiciary chief called for measures to be taken to stop such moves in Iraq.

Al-Mashhadani, for his part, presented a report on latest developments in Iraq and called for expansion of ties between the two Muslim and neighboring states of Iran and Iraq.

He said reconstruction of Iraq would be impossible in an insecure atmosphere and urged adoption of major strides particularly in the field of security as well as promotion of unity among all Iraqi groups.

Meantime, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad reiterated Iran's support for the Iraqi government and parliament. At a meeting with the visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker late Tuseday, President Ahmadi-Nejad stressed that the two Islamic nations are bonded by a common religion, interests and enemies.
