Sudan - Iran seek stronger relations
Sudan-Iran, Politics, 7/5/2006
Iran's Majlis speaker Gholam-Ali in a meeting with Sudanese Ambassador to Tehran Abdullah Khasar al-Bashir today said that given Sudan's ancient civilization and its large Islamic community, the country is of special importance in Iran's foreign policy.
During the meeting, Haddad-Adel said that the current relations between Iran and Sudan -- the largest African country -- is quite favorable. He expressed satisfaction with the properly growing trend of ties as well as economic and political cooperation between them over the past months and appreciated Sudan's approach to Iran's nuclear issue on the international scene.
Turning to the peace agreement, which was recently signed to solve the problems in southern Sudan, he hoped that Sudanese officials will soon resolve the conflicts in Darfur, western Sudan.
For his part, Al-Bashir said that the conditions currently prevailing in the world of Islam calls for further expansion of relations among Muslim states, adding that Sudan intends to strengthen its relations with Iran under the same light. "Sudan believes that close cooperation among parliaments of Islamic states is the best way to cope with the current challenges facing the world of Islam," he said.
The Sudanese diplomat reiterated the need for more unity in the world of Islam and said that the failure to materialize these ideals in the Islamic community is rooted in the lack of serious effort towards full unification required to solve the current problems.
