Iran expects IAEA Board Of Governors to remove nuclear issue
Iran-UN, Politics, 6/15/2006

Iran's ambassador and envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said today that the general atmosphere dominating the IAEA Board of Governors current meeting on Iran's nuclear issue is much more calm.

At the end of this morning's Board of Governor's session, he said that recent developments on the issue have been welcomed by various countries, in particular the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states which have encouraged the parties involved in the case to hold talks.

"A major change at the session was that NAM statement was fully read out by Malaysian envoy and it will be recorded in the agency as a historical document," he added.

In response to the question whether such a calm atmosphere is in favor of Iran's decision to come up with a response to Europe's proposal, he said that many diplomats believe that this calm atmosphere makes the involved parties to seek a proper diplomatic means to solve the issue without any tension.

"Iran has repeatedly stressed that it will not spare any effort to clarify ambiguities," concluded Soltanieh.

Soltanieh said that non-interference of the United Nations Security Council in Iran's nuclear issue and return of the dossier to the UN nuclear watchdog is the only proper way to solve the remaining minor points.

Speaking at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting on Thursday morning, he said that Iran is prepared to enter into talks without any preconditions to clarify any possible ambiguities and solve the trivial matters.

"Once the assessment of the received proposal is completed, we will inform the European Union (EU) of our views," he added.

He said that an active diplomacy is currently underway to this end, including exchange of views with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states, EU, Russia and China, adding that this is a clear sign of Iran's political will to find a just solution to the issue through talks.

Soltanieh said that the Iranian government is also determined to continue cooperation with the IAEA according to the associated letter of association and its commitments within the framework of NPT's Safeguard Agreement.

"Besides, we are intent on keeping a balance between our inalienable rights and commitments. We will also attempt to pave the way for negotiations on the issue," he added.

He underlined that at the same time there is a high expectation that unnecessary and harsh approaches that may disrupt the dominating relatively calm atmosphere and endanger the new multifaceted diplomacy will be avoided.

Turning to Iran's voluntary measures over the past three years, he said, "The IAEA Board of Governors is expected to remove the nuclear issue from its agenda in the shortest possible time."

The diplomat appreciated "NAM's constant precious support" for Iran's nuclear program and pointed to it as a clear reflection of the views of 116 member states, namely the international community, on the issue.
