Sudan, Eritrea agree to resume diplomatic relations
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 6/13/2006
Xinhua News Agency report that "Sudan and Eritrea agreed on Monday to resume their diplomatic relations which were severed in 1995, a senior Sudanese official announced."
It said "Sudanese Presidential Advisor Mustafa Osman Ismail made the announcement at a press conference following meetings involving visiting Eritrean President Assias Afworeki with Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir, Vice President Silva Kiir Mayardit and other government officials."
The report added "Ismail said that the two parties had stressed their commitment to making the relations between the two neighboring countries a model of unity between peoples with different cultures but common interests."
This coincides with talks today to be held in Eritrea by the Sudan government with Sudanese rebels in the eastern part of the country said to be supported by Eritrea.
A Washington Post report said "Eastern rebels, allied with other regional Sudanese rebel groups, have controlled Hamesh Koreb, a small area on the Eritrea-Sudan border for around a decade. The east, which contains Sudan's only port, is the only peripheral area not to have begun peace talks with Khartoum."
