Economic, Politicial status of women discussed at GSW

The economic and political status of women and challenges facing Arab women in the market place dominated the second day of the Global Summit of Women in Cairo, informally known as the "Davos for Women."

Bahraini Minister of Social Affairs Fatma Al-Baloushi said the government has been encouraging women to launch their own businesses, which helps to push forward the development process in the kingdom.

She said her ministry has organized a series of training programmes for women especially in the Information Technology sphere.

South African Minister of Minerals Lindiwe Hendricks said there are 12 female ministers in her country and nine female members- of Parliament.

She also cited her country's efforts in combating labour and domestic violence against women.

Dr Hiba Handoussa, professor of economics at the American University in Cairo and board member of the Central Bank of Egypt, regretted that only six percent of Arab women occupied parliamentary seats.

She urged Arab governments to introduce more facilities to women to launch small-sized projects and bridge the educational gap between males and females.
