Iran prepares its own nuclear package
Iraq-UN, Politics, 6/12/2006

Iranian officials indicated that the package promoted by the EU and US has positive points, but has ambiguities that need to be clarified, with preconditions that violate Iran's rights being unacceptable.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani in Egypt yesterday said referring to the package of incentives offered to Iran that there were "positive points" as well as "ambiguities" in the new proposal, and voiced Iran's opposition to threats and pre-conditions for resumption of nuclear talks.

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hamid-Reza Asefi yesterday said no deadline has been set for Iran's response to a recent package of incentives proposed.

Rapporteur of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali told reporters on Sunday that Europe's proposal on Iran's nuclear issue was examined at a commission meeting which was attended by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

"Mottaki stressed that experts are currently working on the package of incentives. Once the proposal is carefully examined and the views of the officials in charge are expressed unanimously, Iran will announce its views," added the MP.

Jalali said that once the assessment of the proposal is over, Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission will submit its views to officials in charge of Iran's nuclear issue.

"Obviously, haste in expressing our view on the proposal is not in our interests, rather it needs to be examined seriously," concluded the rapporteur.

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hamid-Reza Assefi yesterday in response to a question whether the report saying that another nuclear facility with 164 centrifuges is being constructed in Natanz is correct, he said "A number of centrifuges are added daily to the nuclear fuel cycle. Thus the situation improves day by day." Asefi pointed to the activities of Iranian experts in the sector and said that everything is working properly.

In reply to a question about the Iranian foreign minister's reference to the diplomacy of exchange of visits and whether Iran will suspend the enrichment during the period of talks, he said, "We will not disregard our rights and responsibilities and will certainly act based on our duties and rights." He added "Iran is in a position to come up with its own initiatives" and said Iran will not at all give up its rights, which are non-negotiable.
