Mubarak, Berri discuss Lebanese-Syrian settlement
Egypt-Lebanon, Politics, 6/10/2006

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak met today with Speaker of Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri at the Presidential Palace in Cairo where they discussed Syrian-Lebanese ties in light of the Lebanese national dialogue and the resolutions reached in this respect.

On his part, Berri said his meeting with President Hosni Mubarak was "excellent as usual" adding that he briefed Mubarak on the dialogue course. Berri said that this visit comes among the efforts exerted to restore the bilateral Lebanese-Syrian relations.

Part of the Lebanon-Syria crisis stems from the assassination of prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri. His son, Saad al-Hariri, oead of the Future bloc in Parliament, said that the late Premier liberated Lebanon from “his grave,” but made clear that tensions should be reduced. He said the main battle now is for the sovereignty and independence of the country, at a time when the “symbols of corruption” are trying to derail this goal, and do not want the creation of an international tribunal to put on trial suspects in the late Prime Minister’s assassination.

This comes as UN Secretary General handed the UN Secruity Council a report on the ongoing investigation into the Hariri assassination.

Annan received the report from Serge Brammertz, the Commissioner of the International Independent Investigation Commission (IIIC) dealing with the bombing, which in addition to killing the premier also took the lives of 22 others.

The Security Council has scheduled an open meeting and consultations to discuss the report with Brammertz on Wednesday, 14 June, the spokesman said
