Palestinian Soccer Film Screened on Apartheid Wall in Jerusalem
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 6/9/2006
The Israeli Committee against House Demotions (ICAHD) hosted on Thursday a presentation and screening of the new documentary, Goal Dreams, on the Apartheid Wall in Abu Dis of Jerusalem, the night before the commencement of the World Cup.
The documentary follows the Palestinian national football team as it prepares for a World Cup qualifying match against Uzbekistan. The screening is part of a dual World Premiere with a shorter version of the film, World Cup Inshallah, making a cinematic premiere in London at the Curzon Cinemas.
FIFA, world soccer's governing body, officially recognised the Palestinian national soccer team in 1998, making it one of the first international organizations to recognize Palestine.
Goal Dreams also follows the personal stories of four team members, each coming from different places and lives, and each with a connection to Palestine. The directors worked to make a film that didn't focus directly on political rhetoric. Instead, they describe the story as "identity driven."
The film is a chance to show statehood. It follows players from all over the world coming to represent a country that doesn't exist," said Jeffrey Saunders, one of the two directors of the film. "It's not just a cliché - sport is a universal language. And sometimes sport can move faster than politics."
