Presidents Abbas, Sezer Agree on Necessity of having Fair,
Palestine-Turkey, Politics, 6/8/2006

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and visiting Turkish President, Ahmet Nagdat Sezer agreed today on the necessity of having a fair and comprehensive peace prevail in the Middle East.

Sezer upon arrival in Ramallah was greeted by a number of PLO Executive Committee members, Foreign and Arab Diplomats to the PNA, Christian and Muslims clergymen as well as General Consuls in Jerusalem

In a joint press conference with his guest, President Abbas said "Our talks tackled the current developments in our region. We have agreed on the necessity of having a fair and comprehensive peace prevail, providing stability to all the people in the region, within safe and acknowledged borders, which requires the intensification of efforts from all international parties, so as to return to the negotiating table and reach peace."

"Indeed, this is the path to follow to avoid more conflict in the region, and that can put a halt to all violence, and having peace in the land of peace," he added.

President Abbas mentioned that Turkey, which is situated in the heart of the Middle East, and has represented and still represents the bridge from which this region's civilization has crossed to the Western world, and has provided the model to our culture, is able to continue its exceptional primordial role in our situation and our current world.

"Since Turkey has an active role in this region of the world, in its security, stability, and development, and benefits from positive and balanced relationships with all parties, it is only natural, to expect from it to play a viable role in all the efforts contributing towards solving the Arab-Israeli conflict, and guarantee the freedom of our people from the occupation, and achieving a just and comprehensive peace," he added.

President Abbas appreciated highly the stance of President Ahmet and the Turkish people, in support of our legitimate national rights, including the establishment of our state, and its capital Jerusalem "Al Quds," and reaching a just solution to the refugee issue on the basis of the International Resolution 194.

"Your generous support to the Middle East Peace Process, as well as your continuous call for the return to the negotiating table is appreciated," he added. "Your strong stances in the various forums, regionally and internationally, to support the right of our people to freedom and self determination, are a source of appreciation for us."

President Abbas said that he is honoured to welcome President Sezer warmly in the land of peace and love, Palestine.

"We and our people highly appreciate your presidential visit to Palestine," he said. "This visit confirms your genuine desire to develop and strengthen further the special relations between the two brotherly nations: Turkey and Palestine. It opens a new horizon for more cooperation and an emphasis on the historic relationship that ties our two countries. Indeed, we are linked geographically and we have common values."

President Abbas conveyed his thanks and deep appreciation to "all the generous assistance Turkey is extending to us, especially under the dire circumstances, and that have led lately due to the policy of siege."

"The Turkish-Palestinian relations have witnessed decades of development, by setting the cornerstones for mutual cooperation at all levels," he pointed out. "I was pleased today to welcome Mr. President Sezer. I was also pleased with the talks I have led with him, and with the Turkish officials during my latest visit to Ankara, that was crowned with friendship, understanding and a common desire to develop and emphasis the relationship between our two countries."

President Abbas said today's talks also touched on the mutual cooperation between both countries, in different fields, including politics, culture, education, trade, etc. This reflects our concern of deepening our friendship and cooperation.
