Iran, Syria consider mutual ties as strategic

Syrian presidential special envoy, Mohammad Nassif and Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki conferred yesterday in Tehran on various dimensions of bilateral ties as well as regional and international cooperation.

The two sides termed Tehran-Damascus relations as strategic and sustainable, and assessed the stance and role of regional states, in particular the neighboring ones, in promoting Iraq's security and stability as important and reiterated the need to preserve the country's integrity and unity.

Mottaki and Nassif pointed to Lebanon's national consensus as an effective element in the continuous campaign against occupation and urged the need for alertness of regional nations to foil the plots of their "Zionists" enemies.

President Bashar Assad's special envoy and Mottaki stressed the need for cooperation and unity among Palestinian groups with the government-elect.

They also underlined support for the will of the Palestinian nation to regain its rights as well as maintain resistance against expansionism and occupation by Israel.

The Syrian official declared his country's official approach to Iran's nuclear issue and underlined its support for Iran's legitimate right to access nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

He urged the need for strengthening ties between regional countries and stressed that closer exchange of views play a decisive role in promoting regional stability and security.

Nassif said that the regional countries should also collaborate to confront the plots of Israel against the security and interests of Muslim states.

For his part, Mottaki said that cooperation in various fields, regular exchange of views, mutual will to promote multifaceted bonds are some of the important features of bilateral relations.

Mottaki pointed to plots aimed at undermining independent countries as the enemies threat, and said, "Independent states should secure their individual and collective interests through cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels. " Expounding on Iran's views on the latest regional developments, the minister said that given the sensitivity and decisive role of the region, further cooperation and solidarity among regional countries is necessary.

On the latest status of Iran's nuclear issue, he said, "Iran will respond to the proposal of the 5+1 group after going through it carefully and by taking into consideration the fundamental principles and inalienable rights of the nation." Mottaki said that the legitimate rights of the Iranian nation to access nuclear technology is the cornerstone of Iran's response to the 5+1 proposals.
