Egypt aims for 1 billion in furniture exports

Egypt's Minister of Trade and Industry Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed said his ministry has a plan to double Egypt's exports of furniture to $ one billion annually.
Rasheed asserted that his ministry aimed at involving representatives of the Industrial private sector and investors in developing the necessary programs for the modernization of the furniture industry as they were the real beneficiaries of such programs.
He said the new policy of exhibitions focused on the participation of the private sector along with the government as well as inviting importers of furniture worldwide to attend such exhibitions to back the furniture industry which is one of the oldest crafts in Egypt.
These remarks were made during Rasheed's opening of the 3£d International Furniture and Furnishing Trade Fair "Furnex." Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garana accompanied the minister during the opening ceremony. Rasheed said the Trade Ministry worked out a plan in cooperation with the Industry Modernization Center to develop, and modernize furniture industry.
Egypt adopted the strategy of modernization in the industry sector, he said, noting that the furniture industry was one of the promising industries with big potentials qualifying it to compete on international markets.
"Furnex" has achieved a big jump in its current session as the number of exhibiting companies increased by 22.5 percent from 120 in 2005 to 150 in 2006, said chief of the exportation council for furniture Adham Nadeem. Also the exhibition's area doubled from 11,000 square meters in 2005 to 21,000 square meters in 2006, he added.
Some 150 companies specialized in manufacturing furniture are participating in the four-day exhibition which is organized by the Egyptian Exporters Association in cooperation with the Industry Modernization Center. Some 621 furniture experts from Europe, Asia and the US are attending the fair.
