US, EU to offer better package to Iran on nuclear issue
Iran-UN, Politics, 6/2/2006
UN Security Council permanent members and Germany have issued a statement that indicate that the US and EU will be offering enticements to Iran, in an apparent bid to encourage possible negotiations and to ease the tensions that the US and Europeans have created in their efforts to get Iran to relinquish nuclear fuel production rights.
The US and three European countries, (US, France, and Germany) have been seeking to force Iran to relinquish the rights that it has under the Nuclear Non Proliferation treaty, to develop nuclear technology and industry for civil needs.
However, it seems that the US may have chosen to sidestep any help China and Russia may have given to the US and Europeans on this proposal, as Rice declared that the US is still going to insist that Iran stop making its own nuclear fuel.
However, the US continues to make threats against Iran saying if Iran fails to accept the incentives for talks, the US would take the issue to the UN Security Council.
Rice said "If Iran accepts the offer and suspends its enrichment activities, all the better, then we can get to the table."
The US position might be an opening bargaining position as Iran had said it welcomes any talks, but Iran said it would not accept talks that have preconditions, stressing that its decision to continue making its own fuel is irreversible.
Iran's foregn minster spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi yesterday said "We believe that under the current circumstances, negotiations without any precondition would be best solution to put an end to Tehran-Washington logjam."
Asefi said Rice's offer for talks has nothing new because the US failed to respect Iran's rights stipulated by Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
