Mubarak & Abdullah underline Iraq's unity
Egypt-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 6/1/2006

"The Summit talks between President Hosni Mubarak and Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz took up the Egyptian efforts to resume peace talks between the Palestinian and Israel side," said Egypt's Presidential spokesman Suleiman Awwad, adding that President Mubarak will receive on Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Israeli reports said the meeting is about Olmert's plan for setting final border during his 4-year term of office, and to discuss Rafah border crossing (between Egypt and Gaza) security related issues.

The Egyptian spokesman added that Mubarak was also pursuing contacts with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. An Egyptian security delegation, currently visiting Gaza, is also exerting strenuous efforts to ease tension in the Palestinian territories, Awwad noted.

The Egyptian-Saudi summit also discussed the Middle East peace process, the situation in Iraq, the Iranian nuclear file, the Syrian-Lebanese ties and the Darfur issues, he added.

President Mubarak and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz underlined the need to achieve reconciliation between the different Iraqi sects to help render success to the country's political process, said the presidential spokesman. He said that the two leaders were also looking forward to holding Iraq's National Accord Conference next June in Baghdad.

On the Iranian nuclear file, the two leaders underlined the need to avoid creating any new hot spots in the region. They also urged a diplomatic solution for the current standoff over Iran's nuclear file.

On the Syrian-Lebanese file, he said that the two leaders vowed to pursue efforts to put the Syrian -Lebanese relations back on track. They also expressed hope that the national Lebanese dialogue would be resumed on June 8, he added.

Awwad denied reports about an Arab initiative to form an Arab Troika to tackle the Middle East peace process.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia also called on the international community not to punish the Palestinian people for their democratic choice, he said.
