Syrian imports from Iran exceed 1 billion dollars

Visiting Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade Amir Husni Lutfi conferred yesterday with Iran's Minister of Industries and Mines Ali-Reza Tahmasbi on expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries.

At the meeting, Tahmasbi said the current volume of trade exchanges in industry and mining sectors amounted to over one billion dollars.

According to the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Industries and Mines, the Iranian minister highlighted the good relations between the two countries and said Iran is currently involved in some 16 industrial and mining projects in Syria and is capable of boosting this figure to a much higher number.

Iran is ready to provide Syria as well as other neighboring countries with household appliances, electrical and sanitary equipment, he said adding that the country also welcomes expansion of cooperation with Syrian state-run and private sectors.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is to launch auto industry projects in four countries including Syria which could be regarded as a turning point in implementing major projects in other countries, he said.

The Syrian minister, for his part, referred to Syrian president's remarks on expansion of ties with Tehran and expressed the hope that through removal of the existing problems, grounds will be created for expansion of of mutual cooperation.

The fifth Iran-Syria Industrial and Mining Commission meeting is to be held in Tehran next month, he said and expressed the hope to witness the implementation of other jointly-run projects in Syria.
