Iraq neighbors needed to ensure security: Iran FM
Regional-Iran, Politics, 5/30/2006
Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Manouchehr Mottaki yesterday said that participation of Iraq's neighbors, as well as regional countries, is necessary in order to strengthen security and stability there.
Mottaki made the comment in a meeting with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa in Malaysia's political capital, Putrajaya, while briefing the AL Chief about the outcome of his recent visit of Iraq, and his talks with Iraqi officials, which he evaluated as "positive." He added, "We believe any type of collective measure would be a step forward towards achieving security in Iraq."
The Foreign Minister then focusing on Iran's viewpoints regarding its nuclear program, reiterated, "Tehran is after taking peaceful advantage of the nuclear energy in line with its development objectives, and economic plans." He added, "The advantages of this energy are quite obvious and its superiority compared to other sources of energy are proved."
Mottaki considered the efforts made to create questions in the minds of regional countries about environmental pollution of Bushehr Nuclear Reactor as "Western propagation aimed at depriving the region of the advantages of that clean energy and its role in advancement of countries." The Arab League Secretary General, too, during the meeting referred to the international and, particularly Middle East developments, considering relations and consultation among regional countries "of great significance" under the current conditions.
Amr Moussa then focused on AL's upcoming conference in Iraq, arguing, "Restoration of peace and security in Iraq is extremely important and the Arab League plans to further improve its interactions with Baghdad." Announcing Arab League's full support for Iran's peaceful nuclear program, Moussa said, "Iran's nuclear program is completely in accordance with the international rules and regulations, and the problem in that respect can be solved through holding dialogue within the IAEA." Mottaki and Amr Moussa during the meeting emphasized the need for maintaining continuous contacts and consultations under the prevailing regional and international conditions.
