Arab League backs Iran's peaceful nuclear activities
Regional-Iran, Politics, 5/29/2006
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa today expressed support for Iran's peaceful nuclear activities.
Moussa's at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) meeting in Malaysia said the Middle East region should be free from weapons of mass destruction, he said, adding that peaceful use of nuclear energy is Iran's inalienable right.
Criticizing the double standard applied to the issue of states pursuing nuclear energy, he stressed that the entire Middle East region should be freed from nuclear weapons without discrimination.
All signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, he said, and urged respect for Iran's right to press for this right.
He said the Middle East region has no need for weapons of mass destruction and, therefore, all regional states should contribute to maintaining peace and stability by removing obstacles to insecurity.
