Gamal Mubarak: Egypt stable, terrorism a global phenomena
Egypt, Politics, 5/22/2006
Egypt's National Democratic Party (NDP) Policy Secretary Gamal Mubarak said Egypt remains, a secure and stable country despite recent terror attacks in Sinai.
Speaking to the Egyptian TV yesterday, he denied reports about the possible cancellation of the world economic Forum, currently being hosted in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, over the recent terror attacks in Dahab.
"I never heard of a cancellation threat from the organizers or the Egyptian government, the host." He said Egypt informed the participants that WEF preparations were under way despite the attacks.
Terror is an international phenomenon, said Gamal Mubarak.
Responding to a question on links between the WEF and globalization and protests against it, Gamal Mubarak said demonstrations were common in the developed as well as developing countries. People have different stances in relation to almost everything, said the NDP policy secretary.
Even the World Trade Organization (WTO) meetings witness protests, he noted. The important message sent by this forum is clear in its agenda, he said, adding that the event was mainly concerned with economic and development issues.
Development issues are no longer related to specific areas, maintained Gamal Mubarak. On the immediate effect of the WEF meetings on Egyptian citizen, Gamal Mubarak said the effect would not be felt over few days or weeks.
"During the session, we probed Information Technology, education and the implementation of modern technology to serve other aspects of life," he added.
The effect would be on the Egyptian economy in general and later on the citizens, said the said the NDP policy secretary. It is undeniable that the Egyptian economy achieved some progress over the past two years, he maintained.
New factories are being built and more Egyptian, Arab and foreign investors are doing business in Egypt, he elaborated. Economic reform does not serve only certain entities or businesses, said Gamal Mubarak, adding reform targets the Egyptian economy in general.
On Mubarak's presidential electoral platform, the NDP policy' secretary said the President toured Egyptian governorates, towns and villages to explain to the citizens his plans for the coming six years.
The government and the NDP are committed to put into effect the president's platform, but it can not be done overnight, said Gamal Mubarak. People had rosy dreams such pledges could happen over one year rather than six, he said noting it was not that easy.
The President's electoral programme will be implemented to the letter, said Gamal Mubarak, adding it would take six year to happen. Hindrances and difficulties encountering any electoral platform are Possible, he noted.
