Syria and Iran discuss Iraq and Lebanon
Syria-Iran, Politics, 5/19/2006

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said yesterday in Syria while on a visit that "As neighbors of Iraq, we examined various Iraqi issues and declared our support for the Iraqi political process and establishment of permanent government. Meanwhile, we underlined expansion of bilateral and regional ties with Iraq," he added.

"We believe in making the Iraqi officials responsible to promote full security by national forces to pave the way for withdrawal of the foreign troops according to a timetable as two key axes that will help promotion of security and stability in the country," he added.

He referred to the UN Security Council's resolution on Syria-Lebanon ties and said that UN mandatory approach violates the international law on national sovereignty.

About the current crisis in Lebanon, he said that the best way to solve it is continued talks between the Lebanese factions, which has had good results over the past two months.

He urged the regional states, including Lebanon, to help the Palestinian nation and government as a necessity.

For his part, Al-Moualem told the media that relations between Syria and Lebanon should be based on the will, sovereignty and independence of the two states.

The US proposed draft resolution calling on Syria and Lebanon to establish full diplomatic relations and demarcate their common borders was approved by the UNSC on Wednesday

Regarding Iraq, he said "Close cooperation between Iran and Syria in the face of regional developments and Iraq's neighboring states upcoming meeting in Tehran can help alleviate the suffering of Iraqi nation, establish the country's permanent government and withdrawal of foreign troops."
