Iran assures gulf neighbors of nuclear plans high standards
Gulf-Iran, Politics, 5/19/2006
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki yesterday said on concern of some Arab states in the Persian Gulf about closeness of Bushehr power plant to them, that continuous talks are underway on the issue between Iran and its neighboring states.
"Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is supervised by IAEA, accords with the most advanced standards and is resistant to earthquake," he added.
Mottaki said that he held positive meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his counterpart Walid al-Moualem separately and that ways to enhance the level of mutual ties were discussed.
"The Syrian officials were briefed on the latest developments about our nuclear program, while we had common views in this regard and other matters."
Syria's president met the Iranian foreign minister and said that it is the legitimate rights of all countries including the Islamic Republic of Iran to benefit from nuclear energy to go ahead with national development plans.
Lambasting the unilateral interference of big powers in international fora, President al-Assad said the move would weaken credit and prestige of international organizations. Lauding Iran's constructive role to restore peace and security in the region, he said that regular visits of Iranian officials to the countries in the region is very positive to bolster mutual ties and foil conspiracies of the enemies.
Expressing satisfaction with the deeply rooted ties between the two countries, he called for preparing grounds to deal with regional challenges.
Meantime the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states were to send a special representative to Iran to hold talks on the country's nuclear case, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said.
The Saudi press yesterday quoted Al-Faisal as saying Oman's foreign minister will be the GCC's special envoy and will depart for Tehran within the next few days, saying it was very difficult to ask countries in the Middle East to suspend their nuclear activities when a country in the region has nuclear weapons.
