Egypt-USA, Politics, 5/17/2006

Gamal Mubarak, the Secretary of the National Democratic Party's Polices Committee in Egypt, has asserted to US officials during a last week's whirlwind visit to the United States that the NDP was committed to pursuing political and economic reforms started by President Hosni Mubarak.

The government noted that Gamal Mubarak held talks with Congressmen and a host of American writers and columnists, and that he met with White House National Security Adviser Steve Hadley on Friday.

The US said Gamal Mubarak was in the United States on "private business." and that President Bush "stopped by the meeting."

Egypt's government reported that National Security Council Spokesman Frederick Jones said that President George W. Bush met with Gamal and asked him to send his greetings to President Mubarak, adding that the office of US Vice President Deck Cheney said that the Vice President also met with Gamal.

The Washington Post said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended part of Gamal's talks with Hadley.
