Dutch MP loses citizenship for lying about asylum bid
Regional-European Union, Politics, 5/16/2006
The member of the Dutch parliament Ayaan Hirsi Ali will lose her citizenship following revelations that she lied to Dutch immigration officials when applying for asylum in 1992, news reports said in The Hague today.
Dutch Foreign Minister Rita Verdonk told the parliament that Hirsi Ali's naturalization as a Dutch national was invalid. The minister was reacting to Hirsi Ali's confessions that she had obtained her residence permit in the Netherlands by deliberately providing false information.
Somali-born Hirsi Ali who is a member of the liberal VVD party, gained negative notoriety for her close relationship with the controversial Dutch film-maker Theo Van Gogh.
Hirsi Ali and Van Gogh collaborated on the short film "Submission" which some saw as insulting to Muslims. The 36-year-old Hirsi Ali will reportedly leave the Netherlands for the US where she will take up a position at the neo-conservative think-tank, the American Enterprise Institute( AEI) in September.
