Saudi court stops 30 million to Pakistan
Saudi Arabia, Local, 5/12/2006
A Shariat (Islamic) court in Saudi Arabia has stopped Pakistan's Religious Ministry from transferring Rs. 30 million to the country.
"Daily Times" reported on Friday that the money had been deposited in a Saudi Bank after the sale of the old Pakistan House in Madina.
The court contended that the amount could not be transferred because it was procured from a house gifted by a Saudi king to a former governor general of Pakistan in 1950s.
The court said that the proceeds of the gifted house could not be transferred out of the county.
The Saudi authorities had asked Pakistan to sell the house since it was located near the Prophet Mohammad mosque and they wanted to expand the mosque. akistan was paid Rs. 428 million in cash.
