Nazif: No one above law, corruption will be exposed
Egypt, Politics, 5/8/2006

In the inaugural session of the conference on the role of modern technology in uncovering corruption, Egypt's Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif said the government would face corruption head on adding that the corrupt would be pursued irrespective of their positions.

Nazif stressed that nobody is above the law and that President Hosni Mubarak has given directives for uncovering any corruption or deviation, adding the government spares no effort to uncover any corruption. However, exaggeration should be avoided stressing that innocent people should not be hurt as a result.

Nazif stated that the government strategy for combating corruption is practical, pointing out that the government respects the rule of law and supports the right of citizen to lodge complaints. He referred to the enhancement of press freedom and that a new chapter of the national dialogue has been opened. Nazif stressed the importance of encouraging civil society establishments.

In an interview with the Egyptian television, Nazif described his talks with the union of Journalists as "constructive."

The prime minister said a new bill on publication offenses was expected to be referred to the People's Assembly (parliament) and the Shura Council in the coming few weeks.

On relations with the media and the public, Nazif said the government was seeking more transparency, hoping to boost communication with the Egyptian people.

He denied claims that the government was hindering the issuance of a new legislation abolishing jail sentences in press-related cases.

Nazif said President Mubarak was resolved to abolish jail terms in press-related cases. He said that no Egyptian would be imprisoned for expressing an opinion even if it clashed with that of the president or the government.
