Iran president letter to Bush on prophet's birthday
Iran-USA, Politics, 5/8/2006
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki today handed over a letter from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to his American counterpart President George W. Bush to Swiss embassy in Tehran.
The letter was handed thru the Swiss Embassy in Tehran which is responsible for the US interest sections in Iran.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said that the contents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's letter to his American counterpart President W. Bush will be disclosed at the proper time.
He said that Ahmadinejad's letter to Bush is confidential and for the time being it is impossible to reveal its contents.
Government spokesman, Gholam-Hossein Elham, said President Ahmadinejad's "reviewed international developments and world crises, analyzed the global situation, offered new solutions to resolve such problems and end the current critical condition."
Ahmadinejad in the letter spoke of "the current tense situation in the world and suggested ways of solving problems and easing tensions," Elham said.
Yesterday, Foreign Minister Asefi said "The US has proved that it is unreasonable and that its policy is based on threats to make the world follow it," adding that that Iran is not interested in involving itself in a cold war with the US.
Foreign minister Asefi referred to the US opposition to Iran's determination to seek independence and said that in principle, this artificial crisis is created by the US.
Iranian Ambassador to New Zealand Kambiz Sheikh-Hassani noted that "Iran was obstructed all the way through to reach its rights under the NPT because as a member of NPT we are entitled, so not only the number states who have to help the other members to acquire nuclear technology did not help Iran but they obstructed our efforts, so we had to be discreet in order to reach our needs and we did so without the help of the west and we are determined to continue with our program because we have to respond to the needs of Iranian people, Iranian growing economy. We have said all along the way through that within the charter of the NPT and IAEA Agreement, Iran is open to negotiation, any threat of military action is senseless and illegal and should be rejected utterly by the international community."
The Iranian ambassador added "I think if you look at the rhetoric used by President Bush and the US administration in the past two years Iran has been repeatedly threatened by military action, and unfortunately recently with nuclear strike and it is amazing that there is no hint of objection from the international community but one quotation from my President is taken out of context and unduly propaganda on it."
It should be noted that the Iranian president, as previous Mayor of Tehran, has been described as a very modest person, and his remarks shows him a very pious and forthright in his views.
President Ahmadinejad told reporters he would announce an "important" news item today.
"I think the important news was the president's decision to write letters to leaders of certain countries, the first one being to the US president," he said in response to a reporter who asked whether the news would include Iran's possible pulling out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in case a resolution against it was passed by the Security Council. "Ahmadinejad, in his letter, spoke of the current tense situation in the world and suggested ways of solving problems and of easing tensions," Elham said.
With Iran having joined the nuclear club, Iran had announced most recently new progress in having succeeded in enriching Uranium to a 4.8 percent level.
Yesterday, Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi said "if they step up pressures against Iran, Article 10 of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) about quitting the UN nuclear watchdog will be put on the agenda."
Elham added, "Ahmadinejad has announced that Iran regards the right of revision and review in its ties with international organizations under whatever circumstances.. However, no resolution has been adopted against Iran's nuclear activities yet."
"Earlier, Ahmadinejad had told reporters that he would write letters to leaders of various countries in observance of Year of the Great Prophet Muhammad," the spokesman said.
