Egypt, Cyprus agree on increased trade
Egypt-Cyprus, Politics, 5/5/2006

Egypt's presidential spokesman Soliman Awwad said that President Hosni Mubarak and his Cypriot counterpart Tassos Papadopoulos, currently visiting Egypt, held their summit yesterday which dealt with the current ME situation, the Cypriot question in addition to ways of boosting bilateral relation in trade, tourism and investment fields.

Awwad said that Egypt supported the Cypriot government's stance in solving the Cypriot question according to all relevant UN Security Council resolution.

On the other hand, Awwad said that the trade exchange went up last year by 75 per cent against the figures of 2004, pointing out this exchange hit $ 79 million.

He said President Mubarak agreed with his Cypriot counterpart to activate the Egyptian-Cypriot Business Council established in 2001, to play a greater role in pushing trade exchange and investment forward.

On the sidelines of the Egyptian-Cypriot summit, the spouses of the two presidents, Suzanne Mubarak and Fotini Papadopoulos, held a session of talks. They discussed women and children in Egypt and Cyprus and cooperation in these fields.

Egyptian and Cypriot ministers concerned also held talks on political conditions in the region, bilateral relations and ways of boosting bilateral cooperation in the various fields.

Meanwhile, President Papadopoulos and Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif attended the signing ceremony of five agreements for bilateral cooperation in the fields of scientific research, energy, electricity, oil and natural gas exploration.

Papadopoulos termed his talks with Nazif as fruitful, expressing belief that those five agreements would give an impetus to cooperation between the two countries in different fields, especially the economic one.

On his part, Magdi Radi, cabinet spokesman, said the five agreements acquire importance as they come after Cyprus's joining the European Union and its ability now to access European scientific research centers.

Earlier yesterday, Nazif and the Cypriot guest held a session of talks tackling tradeexchange between the two countries and prospects of setting up joint ventures between the two countries' private sectors, especially in IT fields. Means of activating the Egyptian-Cypriot business council were also discussed. At a joint press conference after the talks, Nazif asserted the possibility of carrying out bilateral mega economic and trade ventures.

On his part, President Papadopoulos said his talks with President Mubarak reflected the identity of views as regards regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Papadopoulos said that Cyprus strongly supports Mubarak's call to hold an international conference on terrorism combat noting that a line should be drawn between terrorism and legitimate resistance against occupation.

Cypriot President added that his country has a great expertise in this field as it was hit by several terrorist operations in the past referring to the need for the two countries to mobilize their efforts to fight terror.
