On Germany's support of US threats to Iran
Iran-Germany, Politics, 5/5/2006
The German government has to adopt a clear position on the continued US threats against Iran over its nuclear program, a leading lawmaker of the German Green party today said.
Speaking during a round-table discussion on Iran's nuclear program broadcast on the German Phoenix television network, Hans-Christian Stroebele expressed concern that the German government would join unilateral US actions against Iran.
"I am afraid that our course vis-a-vis the US will get us into a situation where I believe, we won't be able to say 'no'," added the pacifist legislator, alluding to Chancellor Angela Merkel's strong support for America's hardline policy on Iran's nuclear program.
Stroebele criticized US military threats leveled against Iran, saying Washington has always looked for an excuse for a "regime change in Iran." The Green MP said any nuclear deal with Tehran has to "include Iran's legitimate security interests."
