Ahmadinejad: Iran would change policy in sanctions are ever adopted
Iran-USA, Politics, 5/5/2006

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today that no independent state will accept the claims of the bullying powers. "Our stances on nuclear activities are based on the international regulations and those taking stances against our country in the case of nuclear energy should know that if nuclear energy is good, why we should not have it and if it is bad, why they should have it," said Ahmadinejad in a press conference on the sidelines of the 9th ECO summit.

On Iran-Russia relations, Ahmadinejad said Tehran-Moscow ties are friendly and growing. "And we are interested in further expansion of the relations; and as far as nuclear issue is concerned, we are ready to act within framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency's regulations."

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said the international community should do its best to keep continuation of cooperation between Iran and IAEA adding such a cooperation will response to all questions and ambiguities concerning Iran's nuclear program and warned against consequences of discontinuation of cooperation between Iran and IAEA. He said that Russia, like the IAEA, has seen no evidence that Iran's peaceful nuclear program has military objectives.

Ahmadinejad warned against any sanctions on Iran over its peaceful nuclear case. "Our policies on the nuclear activities have until today been within framework of regulations and if any sanction is issued, our behavior will change accordingly," said Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad said the international organizations' decisions should be based on the law, otherwise they will not be legitimate "and if they decide beyond the law, they will lack legitimacy," he cautioned.

Iran's ambassador and permanent envoy to the UN Mohammad-Javad Zarif yesterday said the newly drafted EU3 resolution regarding Iran aims to create crisis, while no such a crisis is really needed. "This resolution indicates the intentions of those who drafted it to create a crisis" he said.

Today, substitute Friday prayers leader of Tehran Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said Iran is not a country to back down in the face of the "bullying" resolution of westerners. "Instead of being an international institution to support justice, the UN Security Council has turned into a place for denial of international law," said Khatami in his sermon today.

Calling Iran's access to nuclear fuel cycle as an honor for all the Muslim states, Khatami said, "West has passed a bad test in that case." He said westerners have been hostile in Iran's nuclear case, intending to take revenge on Iran.

He went on to say that westerners do not like to see the great Iranian nation stands on its feet. The Iranian cleric also criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its Iran approach and said the Agency would never be able to compensate its ugly function towards the country, and the IAEA has the duty to disarm the countries possessing nuclear arms and help the members gain access to nuclear energy.

"The Agency has been incompetent in the two fields and Israel has now turned into hub of nuclear weapons," he said.

Khatami referred to Iran's self-sufficiency in the field of nuclear fuel and said that instead of encouraging and assisting Iran and supporting justice, the IAEA is backing the bullies and the arrogant powers, that are the "axis of evil."

Iran's President Ahmadinejad said today "Unfounded allegations of the world's bullying powers will not have a mere effect on the will of Iranian nation in its endeavor to move in the path for progress and prosperity." He said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran wants peace and calm based on monotheism, justice and human dignity worldwide."

To a question, Ahmadinejad considered military strike on Iran unlikely, saying, "Those raising such claims, do not know Iran and they are advised to study the geography, condition and history of the Iranian nation." He said any talk about attack on Iran seems more like a joke.
