Israel, Politics, 4/28/2006

Israel said that the Kadima and the Labor Party signed last night a coalition agreement in Kfar Maccabiah, paving the way for Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to present his government next week.

Labor will have seven posts, including defense, education, infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, noting that Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz phoned Labor Party leader Amir Peretz to congratulate him on his appointment as Israel's new defense minister.

It said "Kadima has a formed a bloc with the Pensioners Party, giving it 36 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, while Labor has 19 for a total of 55. Shas, with 12 seats, is said to be close to signing a deal as well. The Labor Party's central committee is due to convene on Sunday to approve the coalition deal, and choose its ministers, and it is possible that United Torah Judaism with six seats will join the coalition as well."
