Iraqi VP wants good ties with Iran
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 4/28/2006

Iraq's Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi said yesterday that his country is after the establishment of good ties with Iran.

Abdul-Mahdi said after his meetings with Najaf Seminary sources of jurisprudence that "Iran is Iraq's most important, dearest neighbor, and we wish to have the best friendly relations with that brother country."

He added, "We have historic ties with Iran and would not forget that the Iranians assisted their Iraqi brethren during the tough years of Saddam and his Baath Party's horrendous rule."

Focusing on US threats against Iran, he added, "Iraq would under no conditions permit any third country, including the United States, to take advantage of its soil to pose military threat against Iran." The Iraqi vice president said, "Threats would lead to no tangible results and pursuing diplomatic talks and adopting peaceful measures would be the best way to tackle the problem."

Adel Abdul-Mahdi who was reappointed as Iraq's Vice President last week with the confidence vote of Iraqi MPs had before the press conference held talks with Grand Ayatollahs of Najaf, and the greatest Shiite religious authority in Iraq, Grand Ayatollah Seyed Ali Sistani.

Focussing on that meeting, he said, "That supreme source of jurisprudence during the meeting emphasized that a time schedule needed to be drafted for the evacuation of the multi-national forces from Iraq.

Abdul-Mahdi added, "Grand Ayatollah Sistani also asked for the government's cooperation with all political parties, as well as with all social and religious fractions in the country in a bid to re-establish peace and security throughout Iraq."

He concluded his remarks echoing Ayatollah Sistani's demand for the government's interference in clearing the status of those Iraqis that have been urged to leave their hometowns during recent aggressive clashes with armed pressure groups in Iraq.
