Egypt, Politics, 4/26/2006
Fresh after three attacks in the Egyptian city of Dahab that occurred Monday, a new attack took place today near a US military base used by the US to help secure the Sinai area in support of the Egypt-Israel 1979 peace agreement.
The Washington Post reported that two bombers, one of which said to be a suicide bomber, attacked Egyptian police today in that area, and the attackers were killed saying "An explosive the man was carrying blew up in his possession," with indication it the bomb was meant to be tossed at a car.
Yesterday, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak and his spouse visited Sharmal-Sheikh Hospital where he was briefed on the measures adapted for taking maximum care of the persons injured in the Dahab bombings.
The president ordered conveying critical cases to Cairo specialized hospitals saying all facilities would be offered through the armed forces and the ministry of health.
At the hospital, Mubarak presided over a meeting attended by the Prime Minister and the ministers of information, tourism, health and southern Sinai governor.
Mubarak decided to extend an urgent assistance of LE 60,000 to each of the families of the Egyptian victims of yesterday's triple blasts that killed and injured scores at the Red Sea resort of Dahab.
On his part, Information Minister Anas El Fiqi said that the president held a meeting following his visit to the victims at Sharm El Sheikh hospital on the results of ongoing investigations to pursue the culprits and coordinated efforts to contain the crisis.
Mubarak gave instructions for the rapid removal of all the remains that resulted from the explosions to allow life to be restored to normal as quickly as possible to the area, asserting the importance of taking all the necessary security measures to protect tourists.
The president asserted at the meeting that there would be no tolerance with the perpetrators of Dahab incidents or with anyone else who plotted to destabilize the country and terrorize its peaceful people, Fiqi said. Government sources say 23 people are said to have died from the Dahad bombings with 62 injured including 42 Egyptians and 20 foreigners.
Egypt derives great income from the tourism industry. The president promised that Egypt would do its best to guarantee the safety of all tourists on its lands, he added.
