US concern about Iran's entity, not nuclear issue
Iran-USA, Politics, 4/24/2006

Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Hosseini-Tash today said the truth is that Iran's nuclear program is of little significance to the US, rather the identity and entity of Iran and the Islamic Revolution is the main issue of concern.

He said that the US does not like to see that a religious system seeks to develop a powerful state capable of competing at the regional and global levels and that the US aims to overlook the reality about a powerful and advanced Iran, saying that if any future talks are to be sincere, they should be based on the actual identity of both sides.

"Ongoing talks show that according to the views of the majority, Iran's nuclear case is not a global issue of the public concern. Rather it is merely a matter of concern to Iran and the US. In general, it is associated with the problem between Iran and the US, which is contrary to what the US attempts to insinuate, namely that the 'dossier is the concern of the world community," he added.

Hosseini-Tash noted that under the present conditions, there is no specific perspective for Iran-US talks on the nuclear issue. He noted that even if supposedly such talks are to be held, the subject to be discussed should be clarified, given that Iran's nuclear case appears to be one thing, while in essence it is a different matter.

"It has been clarified that Iran is not determined to develop nuclear weapons, which has been repeatedly underlined by the agency. Besides, reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Chief Mohamed Elbaradei have verified several times that there is no deviation from peaceful path in Iran's nuclear activities," he added.

"Given the discussions on the issue in the UNSC, today its status is unclear and according to relevant declaration, ElBaradei is expected to submit his report in the next joint meeting of the Board of Governors and UNSC. The dossier is now between the UNSC and the UN nuclear watchdog and it can be said that the case has neither been taken away from the jurisdiction of the agency, nor is it still on the IAEA agenda," he added.

He said that once the nuclear dossier was reported to the UN Security Council, more attention was given to its political aspects and it is no longer a technical and legal case. "According to US claims, Iran intends to access nuclear weapons. It should be decided how such a claim can either be verified or denied. In fact, this is a legal and technical issue, which is not negotiable."
