US - Iran talks after Iraqi government formation
Iraq-Iran-USA, Politics, 4/19/2006
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said yesterday that he will take part in upcoming talks between Iran and the United States tentatively scheduled to be held after the formation of a new Iraqi government.
Some Arab countries will be called upon to study the agenda of the talks, Zebari told a news conference in Baghdad.
The US Ambassador to Baghdad and Iraqi Shi'ite leader Seyed Abdol-Aziz Hakim have recently called on Iran, US and Iraq to speed up holding of the talks.
Hakim has already called on Iran to open a dialogue with the US on disputed issues with Washington over Iraq.
Washington and Tehran have agreed the talks would only cover the situation in Iraq.
Abdol-Aziz Hakim heads the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) which initially proposed the talks.
A source in the Iranian embassy in Baghdad disclosed Tuesday that talks between Iran and the US will be held only after formation of the new Iraqi government.
The talks will be held in accordance with their agreement, said the source. There has been no word on when or how the talks would proceed. The two sides, US and Iran, have not also confirmed the names of those who will be participating in the talks.
