Iran urges Muslim countries to support Hamas
Palestine-Iran, Politics, 4/15/2006

Iran's Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel today in Tehran urged Islamic and independent countries to support Hamas victory in recent parliamentary election in Palestine.

Haddad-Adel made the remark in a meeting with the Qatari Advisory (Shura) Council Speaker Mohammad bin Mubarak al Kholeifi on the sidelines of the Third International Conference on Qods and Support for the Rights of Palestinian People, opened in Tehran Friday afternoon.

"I hope the Palestinian people will achieve their legitimate demands with such a support," he said while praising Qatar's active participation in the Tehran conference on Palestine.

He said Tehran and Doha have highest level of bilateral relations, adding, "Qatar, as an old friend of Iran, enjoys a special position in the country's foreign policy."

He pointed to deep-rooted religious, cultural, geographical and economic commonalties between the two countries, saying, "Such bonds will consolidate mutual relations."

The Iranian speaker outlined ongoing developments in the region and the country's peaceful nuclear activities, saying, "Oil resources of the region will run out one day. On that day, regional states should not seek assistance from the West.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran carries out its peaceful nuclear activities very transparently and within framework of international treaties. It regards its progress in line with regional development." Al Kholeifi, for his part, praised Iran's attention to Muslim issues and Palestine in particular.

Referring to Iran's nuclear activities, he said Qatar believes Iran's nuclear program is peaceful and that certain Western states are not willing to see progress of regional countries.

He invited his Iranian counterpart to pay a visit to Qatar which was accepted by Haddad-Adel.
