Saudi Arabia detains 40 suspects, seizes explosives in Abqiq
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 3/30/2006

Saudi Arabia's authorities detained 40 suspects in various parts of the kingdom and seized large amounts of explosives and weapons in the oil Abqiq complex.

A spokesman for the Saudi ministry of interior said that the detainees are Saudis and non Saudis, noting that the acts of detention were carried out during the past days and that some of them have links to disseminating terrorist ideas on the Internet, and others for providing supplies and shelter for what they described as terrorists.

The spokesman added that the security forces seized more than 100 bombs and scores of machine guns, giving no mention of the detained persons who planned to launch attacks.

Worthy mentioning that al-Qaida vowed to launch attacks after the attempt to attack the oil Abqiq complex in February. Two suicide attackers on top of the wanted were killed during the attack which was the first large attack launched by al-Qaida fighters against oil installations in the largest crude oil exporting country in the world.

Al-Qaida wing in Saudi Arabia has been launching a violent campaign since more than two years aiming at toppling the royal family and expelling westerners from this country.

The Saudi authorities say that some 144 Saudi and foreigners including security forces and 120 gunmen were killed in attacks and clashes with the police since May 2003 when al-Qaida suicide bombers carried out explosions in three western presidential complexes in Riyadh.
