Expected results for the Israeli elections
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/28/2006
With the exception of an unexpected victory for the parties of the so-called extremist right, the Israeli elections will green light the next government to separate from the Palestinians after 39 years of occupation, but eventually such separation will not be from all the lands Israel had occupied in 1967.
After the recent Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in the Summer of this year, the form of the next Israeli Knesset will define the final borders for Israel and the size of lands which the Israelis will chop from the West Bank to annex, while keeping occupied Jerusalem as Israelis say.
Olmert described the elections as a referendum for a unilateral plan for border demarcation of Israel with the Palestinian territories and stressed that his steps will be similar to the plans of the founder of the Kadima party prime minister Ariel Sharon who is in a coma.
It is an unprecedented event that one Israeli party would win the greater majority of the 120 seat Israeli Knesset and the Israeli election circle to witness this time the bilateral rivalry known between the two poles of the political life in Israel: the Likud and the labor parties, as the eyes of voters are set on the Kadima party.
The Kadima party was formed by the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon in November 2005 and was led by Olmert after Sharon had a strong stroke on January 4th this year.
Kadima, the ruling Israeli party is expected to get according to opinion polls 35 seats. A matter which is considered by the party sides as a strong strike and an obstacle on the way to form a new governmental coalition with a vast parliamentary base.
